Partendo dalla conferenza di Paul Ricoeur Quale nuovo ethos per l’Europa?, il testo interroga il
valore che può avere oggi la traduzione ai fini della costituzione di un ethos europeo, ovvero in
vista della costituzione di un luogo comune nel quale le diverse culture che permettono di individuare uno spirito europeo possano coabitare. Passando dalla “traduzione come paradigma” al “conflitto delle traduzioni” e passando attraverso il confronto con Antoin Berman, François Ost, Thomas Kuhn e altri autori, il testo approda alla proposta del “chiasmo della traduzione”, dove quest’ultima è letta come potenza metaforica che incrocia l’esigenza di verità. Dove, infine, tale “verità” rappresenta ciò che ancora oggi resta “impensato” dell’unione Europea e che ogni minoranza sia culturale, sia linguistica, anche all’interno dell’Europa, può tradurre davanti all’altro per co-abitare con l’altro.

The essay, starting from Paul Ricoeur’s “Quel éthos nouveau pour l’Europe?”, examines the value of translation for the creation of the european ethos, that is a commonplace in which different cultures that define the european spirit can coexist. Passing from “translation as a paradigm” to “the conflict of translations” and through the comparison with Antoin Berman, François Ost, Thomas Kuhn and other authors, the text arrives to a proposal of “chiasm of translation”, a metaphorical power that intersects with the need for truth. Where, finally, that “truth” resides in what still remains “unthought” of the European Union and that every minority, whether cultural or linguistic, even within Europe, can translate in front of the other to coexist with the other.
