Per capire l’Europa occorre arrivare al cuore della sua tradizione culturale, più che precisarne i confini geografici: Presilla giustifica la sua posizione a partire dalla secondarietà dei romani, l’atteggiamento per cui essi riconobbero nella cultura greca un vertice a cui continuamente rifarsi nei secoli, anche dopo che la Grecia aveva cessato di essere indipendente. Questa tesi viene messa a confronto con la difesa del “classico” proposta da Settis: entrambe le proposte sembrano convergere attorno a una nozione progettuale di classicità, che rappresenta il necessario pendant alla secondarietà. Tale prospettiva, se correttamente intesa, si rivela un antidoto contro le ideologie.

The way to understand Europe is by reaching the heart of its cultural tradition, not only by defining geographical borders: Presilla justifies his position by taking into account the Romans’s secondarity, their idea that greek culture was a point of reference during the centuries, even after Greece had ceased to be independent. This thesis is compared to Settis’ defense of the “classic”: both proposals seem to converge towards the notion of classical nature, which represents the necessary pendant to secondarity. If this perspective is properly understood, it can be considered as an antidote against ideologies.
